Due to his training he is able to care for you not only as an outpatient, but if you are hospitalized, he will follow you throughout your stay, including time spent in an intensive care unit. He acts as the "captain of the ship" to direct the interaction of other doctors who may be seeing you, so that one person is aware of what everyone else is doing.
